Chania Mountain Run – Explore the Malaxa Mountains
Escape the city and discover the mountains just outside Chania on this scenic trail run through the beautiful Malaxa area.
Only around 15 minutes from Chania, we’ll start in the small village of Nerochourou before heading into the foothills of the Malaxa mountains. This approximately 8 km loop combines forest and mountain trails, panoramic views, historic ruins, traditional churches and some of Crete’s hidden corners that you might otherwise miss.
What to expect
The route takes us away from the busy tourist areas and into a quieter side of Crete. We’ll follow a mostly non-technical mountain trail with approximately 365 m / 1,200 ft of elevation gain, taking our time to enjoy the scenery and the places we discover along the way.
As we climb, we’ll pass old ruins and reach a beautiful natural spring, where you can stop for a refreshing drink of fresh mountain water.
The trail then crosses the mountain, taking us past three small historic churches, each with its own character and story. Along the way, you’ll get beautiful views across the countryside towards Chania and the sea, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs.
One of the churches is a favourite spot for the local goats, while another sits tucked away amongst wildflowers with an incredible view over Chania. On the descent, we’ll reach the final church, built beside a dramatic rocky outcrop — a perfect place to pause and take in the landscape.
Terrain & difficulty
This is a mountain trail run rather than a road run, with approximately 90% of the route on non-technical trails.
Expect:
• Approximately 8 km / 5 miles
• Around 365 m / 1,200 ft elevation gain
• Mostly natural mountain trails
• Some rocky and uneven sections
• Uphill and downhill running
• Short walking sections on steeper climbs if needed
You don't need to be an experienced trail runner, but you should be comfortable running on uneven terrain and with climbing and descending. We move at a relaxed, supportive pace, adapting to the group rather than racing the mountain.

Hi, I’m Helen, founder of **Cretan Wild**, a local outdoor adventure company offering trail running, hiking and active experiences across Crete. I discovered running at 39 and it completely changed the direction of my life, eventually bringing me back to Crete and into the mountains. Since then, running has taken me from my first marathon to ultra-distance adventures around the world, including setting a women’s FKT across Arizona. Through Cretan Wild, I now share my love of running, nature and Crete with visitors from around the world. Whether we’re exploring Chania’s coastline or heading into the White Mountains, my runs are relaxed, inclusive and all about discovering Crete through movement, local knowledge and good company.
